Dry Throat

How Chinese medicine differentiates dry throat — distinct from Sore Throat and Xerostomia (Dry Mouth) already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Persistent dry throat with difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, or a lump sensation that doesn't resolve needs medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.

The Six Patterns

1. Empty-Heat Caused by Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry throat worse at night, thirst with desire to sip small amounts of water, night sweats, heat sensation in palms/soles/chest, flushed cheekbones, restlessness or difficulty sleeping, low back soreness, tinnitus.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry body with cracks, little or no coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin, clear the empty Heat that rises and dries the throat.
Note: no moxa given the Yin deficiency. Matched to this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency-Empty-Heat-blazing slide via the night-sweats/five-center-heat/flushed-cheekbones symptom set, the same match used elsewhere in this batch.

2. Wind-Heat Invading the Lungs View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sore, dry throat that comes on suddenly, fever stronger than chills, thirst with desire for cool drinks, yellow or turbid nasal mucus, cough with thick yellow phlegm.
Tongue: Red tip, thin yellow coating, body slightly red. Pulse: Floating and rapid.
Treatment principle: Disperse Wind-Heat, clear the Heat that dries the Lung's fluids.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Invasion-of-Lungs-by-Wind-Heat slide via the fever/sore-throat/yellow-phlegm symptom set.

3. Spleen-Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry throat not relieved by drinking, poor appetite, abdominal bloating after meals, loose stools, fatigue and lack of energy.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender body with tooth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Deficient, soft, and weak at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Strengthen the Spleen's transformation of fluids so clear moisture can rise to the throat.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Spleen-Qi-deficiency slide.

4. Liver-Qi Stagnation That Transforms Into Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry throat accompanied by bitter taste, irritability and explosive anger, distending pain along the ribcage, worse with stress or emotional upset, red face and eyes, restlessness and disturbed sleep.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid.
Treatment principle: Course the Liver and resolve constraint, clear Heat before it scorches the throat.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat slide, the same paraphrase-link convention used throughout this site.

5. Lung and Kidney Yin Deficiency With Empty Fire View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry scratchy throat often worse in the evening, night sweats and afternoon low-grade fever or warmth, lower back soreness and weak knees, malar flush, tinnitus or ringing in ears.
Tongue: Red, thin body with cracks, little or no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine and rapid, weak in both Chi positions and the right Cun.
Treatment principle: Nourish Lung and Kidney Yin so the throat regains its natural lubrication.
Note: no moxa given the Yin deficiency. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-and-Lung-Yin-deficiency slide, the same slide also used for Vocal Cord Edema in this batch.

6. Stomach Fire (Stomach Heat) View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Intense thirst with strong craving for cold drinks, foul breath, swollen/painful/bleeding gums, burning sensation in the upper stomach, constipation with dry hard stools.
Tongue: Red body possibly with red prickles in the center, thick dry yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid, slippery, and forceful, especially strong at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Clear excess Heat from the Stomach channel that rises to scorch the throat.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Stomach-Heat slide.
