Essential Tremor

How Chinese medicine differentiates essential tremor, the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A new or worsening tremor needs a neurological evaluation to rule out Parkinson's disease or other causes before acupuncture is considered.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for essential tremor — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Five Patterns

1. Liver Wind Agitating Internally due to Liver Yang Rising View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A coarse, forceful tremor of the hands, head or limbs; severe dizziness; a distending headache; a stiff neck; a flushed face and red eyes; irritability; insomnia with vivid dreams.
Tongue: Red, stiff or trembling, possibly deviated, thin yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry, Fine, Rapid.
Treatment principle: Calm the Liver and extinguish Wind, subduing the Yang that is agitating the limbs.
Note: no moxa. Near-exact match with Liver-Yang rising — dizziness, a distending headache, irritability, flushed face/red eyes and insomnia with vivid dreams are shared almost point for point, though the deck itself doesn't name tremor specifically.

2. Wind-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Head shaking or limb trembling; copious white, frothy sputum; heaviness in the body or limbs; chest stuffiness; dizziness; slurred speech.
Tongue: Normal or slightly pale, swollen, teeth marks, white greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry, Slippery.
Treatment principle: Dry Dampness and expel Phlegm, move Qi and open constraint, dispersing the Wind-Phlegm driving the tremor.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site combines Wind and Phlegm into one named pattern, so no pattern link is given here.

3. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: A fine, subtle tremor worsening with fatigue; a pale complexion and lips; persistent fatigue and weakness; a poor appetite.
Tongue: Pale, possibly thin, teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine, weak.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi and generate Blood, strengthening the Spleen and Lungs while nourishing the Heart to calm the spirit.
Note: moxa applicable. No deck on this site combines a generic Qi and Blood deficiency pattern, so no pattern link is given here.

4. Kidney-Essence Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A fine tremor worsening with fatigue; soreness and weakness in the lower back and knees; dizziness, tinnitus and poor memory; insomnia with a restless mind.
Tongue: Red, thin, little or no coating, possible fine cracks. Pulse: Fine, Deep, Rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin and extinguish Wind, subduing floating Yang and generating Essence.
Note: no moxa. Matches Kidney-Essence deficiency — direct name match; tinnitus, poor memory and lower back/knee weakness are shared, though the deck doesn't name tremor specifically.

5. Yang Deficiency with Cold-Damp View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A heavy, stiff tremor worse with cold; an aversion to cold, especially along the back; cold hands and feet; low back soreness and coldness; fatigue; a desire to lie down.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, teeth marks, white greasy moist coating. Pulse: Deep, Slow.
Treatment principle: Tonify Kidney-Yang, benefit Essence and fill the Marrow, warming the Gate of Life Fire.
Note: moxa applicable. Matches Kidney-Yang deficiency — aversion to cold, cold limbs and low back soreness are shared.
