Excessive Urination (Polyuria)

How Chinese medicine differentiates excessive urine volume — distinct from Nocturia already covered, which is about nighttime timing rather than total volume — the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Persistently large-volume urination (especially with excessive thirst or weight loss) needs medical evaluation — diabetes and kidney function must be ruled out — before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

The Five Patterns

1. Kidney-Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Frequent, large volumes of clear urine especially at night, feeling cold particularly in the lower back and knees, cold aching lower back, fatigue, pale complexion and cold hands/feet.
Tongue: Pale, puffy tongue with teeth marks and white wet coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak.
Treatment principle: Warm Kidney-Yang and strengthen the water gate's closing function.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-Yang-deficiency slide.

2. Spleen and Kidney Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Urination worse at night, loose stools, lower back and knee soreness and weakness, fatigue, poor appetite with bloating, pale complexion.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with teeth marks. Pulse: Deep, weak, thin.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen and Kidney Qi to restore holding and consolidation functions.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Linked to this site's Kidney-and-Spleen-YANG-deficiency slide despite the source naming plain \"Qi\" — the same recurring judgment call made for Alzheimer's Disease and Strangury (both batch 33), flagged rather than presented as a perfectly clean fit.

3. Kidney-Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Night sweats, heat in the palms/soles/chest, dark scanty urine despite frequent urge, dry mouth and throat.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry with little or no coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid, weak at the left rear position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney-Yin and clear Empty-Heat disturbing the Bladder.
Note: no moxa given the Yin deficiency. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency slide.

4. Damp-Heat in the Bladder View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Burning or stinging urination, dark yellow cloudy urine, urgent need to urinate, lower abdominal fullness/pain, thirst with little desire to drink.
Tongue: Red body with yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and drain Dampness from the Bladder to restore normal function.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Bladder slide.

5. Disharmony Between Heart and Kidneys View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Nighttime urination, insomnia with difficulty falling or staying asleep, mental restlessness, palpitations, heat in the palms/soles/chest, dry mouth and throat.
Tongue: Red, thin body with a redder tip, scanty or no coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid, weaker at the rear position.
Treatment principle: Restore Heart-Kidney communication by clearing Heart-Fire and warming Kidney-Water.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Kidneys-and-Heart-not-harmonized slide — its Yin-deficiency/Empty-Heat framing (insomnia, palpitations, heat in palms/soles) matches directly, continuing the correct-side of the recurring distinction first resolved for Early Awakening and Frequent Night Waking.
