Cloudy Urine (Turbid Urine)

How Chinese medicine differentiates cloudy or turbid urine — distinct from Nocturia and Weak Urine Stream already covered — the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Cloudy urine with pain, fever, or blood needs medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for cloudy urine — 11 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action

The Five Patterns

1. Damp-Heat in the Bladder View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Burning or stinging during urination, lower abdominal fullness and pressure, urgency and frequent need to urinate, dark yellow turbid urine, thirst with little desire to drink.
Tongue: Red body with yellow greasy coating thickest at the root. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and dry Dampness, separate turbid from clear, drain Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner and Bladder.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Bladder slide.

2. Spleen-Qi Sinking View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Urine like rice water or greasy, worse after meals or standing, bearing-down or dragging sensation in the lower abdomen, chronic fatigue and weak limbs, poor appetite, loose stools.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender body with teeth marks and thin white coating. Pulse: Weak, especially at right Guan, may be deep and forceless.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen-Qi and lift the sinking Qi, preventing turbid Dampness from descending.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points, especially DU-20. Direct match with this site's own Spleen-Qi-sinking slide.

3. Liver and Gallbladder Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dark yellow or reddish turbid urine, bitter taste in the mouth, distension ache or pain under the ribs especially on the right, irritability and a short temper, nausea or aversion to greasy foods.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides and thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry, slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Drain excess Fire from the Liver and Gallbladder, clear Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner, restore the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Gall-Bladder-and-Liver slide — its core symptom list (dark turbid urine, bitter taste, rib pain) is this pattern's own presentation.

4. Kidney-Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dark yellow or reddish turbid urine, night sweats, heat in the palms soles and chest, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, dry mouth and throat, dizziness or ringing in the ears.
Tongue: Red, thin body with little or no coating, dry surface, possible cracks. Pulse: Fine and rapid, especially weak at left rear position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney-Yin and clear Empty-Heat, subdue the deficiency-Fire that concentrates urine.
Note: no moxa given the Empty-Heat. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency slide.

5. Kidney-Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Pale milky urine that looks like rice water, cold and aching lower back and knees, frequent urination especially at night, deep fatigue and feeling cold all over.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender body with teeth marks and wet white coating. Pulse: Deep, slow and weak, especially at rear positions.
Treatment principle: Tonify Kidney-Yang, warm the Gate of Life Fire, restore the fluid transformation ability, astringe the Lower Burner.
Note: moxa strongly indicated throughout. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yang-deficiency slide.
