Facial Swelling

How Chinese medicine differentiates facial swelling — distinct from Swollen Eyes already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Sudden facial swelling with difficulty breathing or swallowing is a medical emergency and needs immediate evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for facial swelling — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

1. Wind-Cold-Water Invading the Lungs View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sudden facial puffiness especially around the eyes, chills and aversion to cold with no sweating, cough with copious thin white frothy sputum.
Tongue: Pale and puffy with teeth marks, white slippery coating with a watery sheen. Pulse: Floating and tight, often with a wiry quality.
Treatment principle: Release the exterior, warm the Lungs, and restore the descending fluid movement.
Note: moxa applicable given the Cold. Direct match with this site's own Invasion-of-Lungs-by-Wind-Water slide — its own clinical tip names sudden facial swelling with aversion to Wind exactly.

2. Wind-Heat Invading the Lungs View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sudden facial swelling especially around the eyes, fever with mild chills, sore throat, thirst, cough with thick yellow phlegm, nasal congestion with yellow mucus.
Tongue: Red tip with thin yellow coating, body slightly red. Pulse: Floating and rapid, especially prominent at right Cun.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat, release the exterior, and restore Lung function.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Invasion-of-Lungs-by-Wind-Heat slide.

3. Cold-Damp Invading the Spleen View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Facial puffiness with a heavy sensation, sticky or greasy taste in the mouth, poor appetite and loose stools, abdominal bloating and fullness, fatigue and a heavy body feeling.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks and a thick white greasy coating, excessively moist. Pulse: Soggy or slippery and slow, weakest at right Guan.
Treatment principle: Warm the Spleen, expel Cold, and resolve Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable given the Cold. Direct match with this site's own Cold-Dampness-invading-the-Spleen slide.

4. Spleen-Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Soft pale facial puffiness not red or painful, loose watery stools often with undigested food, feeling cold especially in the hands and feet, fatigue and a heavy sensation in the limbs.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender body with scalloped edges and a white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, slow and weak, especially at right Guan.
Treatment principle: Restore the Spleen's warming fire to transform and transport fluids properly.
Note: moxibustion strongly indicated throughout. Direct match with this site's own Spleen-Yang-deficiency slide.

5. Kidney-Yang Deficiency with Water Overflowing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Puffy face especially the eyelids in the morning, feeling of cold in the lower back and limbs, scanty clear urination, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, loose stools or diarrhea.
Tongue: Pale, puffy and teeth-marked with a white slippery coating and an excessively wet surface. Pulse: Deep, slow and weak, especially at the Chi position.
Treatment principle: Warm Kidney-Yang to restore the body's metabolic fire and water regulation.
Note: moxibustion strongly indicated throughout. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yang-deficiency-Water-overflowing slide.

6. Toxic-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Red, hot, painfully swollen face, high fever, boils abscesses or infected sores on the face or body, severe sore throat, intense thirst for cold drinks, restlessness and irritability.
Tongue: Red body with prickly thorns, dry yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid and forceful, often full or overflowing.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat, resolve toxins, and reduce local inflammation and swelling.
Note: no moxa. No standalone Toxic-Heat slide exists on this site, a confirmed and recurring absence, so no pattern link is given here.
