Foot Edema

How Chinese medicine differentiates foot edema into the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Edema and Swollen Ankle pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Sudden foot swelling, especially one-sided or with chest pain or breathlessness, needs prompt medical assessment to rule out a blood clot or heart or kidney cause.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for foot edema — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
SP-9Regulates the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Opens the Water passages.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Promotes the function of the Liver and the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Original Qi.
The Four Patterns

1. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Pitting edema; heaviness in the legs; fatigue; poor appetite; loose stools; worse after eating or in the afternoon; improved with rest and elevation.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, teeth-marked, white greasy moist coating. Pulse: Soggy and slow, weak overall, especially at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Spleen Qi, strengthens digestive function and drains accumulated Dampness.
Note: moxa is appropriate. No standalone Spleen-Deficiency-with-Dampness slide exists on this site's decks — no pattern link is given here.

2. Kidney Yang Deficiency with Water Overflowing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Deep, pitting edema; cold feet and lower back even in warm weather; scanty, clear urine; aching lumbar soreness; overall chilliness; worse with damp weather and cold exposure.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, teeth-marked, white slippery coating, wet surface. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak, especially at the rear position.
Treatment principle: Warms Kidney Yang, restores metabolic fire and transforms and excretes accumulated water.
Note: moxa is strongly indicated.

3. Damp-Heat in the Lower Burner View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Red, hot, painful swelling; a tight sensation; dark or burning urination; heaviness in the legs; an acute inflammatory presentation; worse in hot, humid weather and with greasy foods.
Tongue: Red, slightly swollen, thick yellow greasy coating most prominent at the root. Pulse: Slippery and rapid, soggy, stronger at the rear position.
Treatment principle: Clears Heat, dries Dampness and strengthens the Spleen to stop further Damp-Heat generation.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Liver slide, its established Lower-Burner Damp-Heat convention.

4. Wind-Damp

Clinical manifestations: Heavy, numb swelling with wandering joint aches; limited ankle and toe mobility; flares in damp or rainy weather; improves with warmth and gentle movement; aversion to wind with a heavy-headed sensation.
Tongue: Normal or slightly pale, white greasy coating, possibly slightly swollen. Pulse: Floating, soggy, moderate, sometimes slippery.
Treatment principle: Dispels the exterior Wind-Damp pathogen, tonifies Protective Qi, promotes urination and restores channel circulation.
Note: no moxa. This site's decks have no Wind-Damp slide — no pattern link is given here.
