Grief

How Chinese medicine differentiates grief — the emotion that most directly injures the Liver's ability to keep Qi flowing smoothly — into the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Grief that includes thoughts of self-harm, or that doesn't ease over time, needs professional mental health support alongside anything offered here.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for grief — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat slide.

3. Qi-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Sensation of a lump in the throat that cannot be swallowed or coughed out, chest and upper abdominal oppression, symptoms worsen or ease with emotional stress, frequent sighing, nausea or queasiness, throat clearing or frequent swallowing.
Tongue: Normal pink-red body, possibly slightly swollen, white greasy or slippery coating. Pulse: Wiry and slippery.
Treatment principle: Move Qi and dissipate nodules, descend Qi, resolve Phlegm.
Note: no moxa. This site has no dedicated Qi-Phlegm slide separate from this site's own Globus Sensation match (Stomach-Qi-rebelling-upwards) — since this pattern's own emphasis is Qi-and-Phlegm together rather than pure rebellious Stomach Qi, no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Heart and Spleen Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations with anxiety and feeling easily startled, poor appetite with bloating and loose stools, extreme fatigue worsening after eating or exertion, difficulty falling asleep with vivid disturbing dreams, sallow pale complexion and poor memory.
Tongue: Pale, tender, puffy body with teeth marks and thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, especially at the left Cun (Heart) and right Guan (Spleen) positions.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, nourish Blood, strengthen the Spleen, anchor the mind.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Matched to this site's own Spleen-and-Heart-Blood-deficiency slide.

5. Heart and Kidney Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations or pounding heartbeat, night sweats, insomnia with vivid restless dreams, low back soreness and weakness, tinnitus or ringing in the ears, dizziness, warm palms/soles/chest, mental restlessness and anxiety.

Treatment principle: Nourish Yin and Blood, clear Empty Heat, tonify Heart Qi, anchor the mind.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Kidneys-and-Heart-not-harmonized slide.
