Head Tremor

How Chinese medicine differentiates head tremor into the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Essential Tremor and Hand Tremor pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A new or worsening tremor needs neurological evaluation to rule out a treatable underlying cause before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for head tremor — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Five Patterns

1. Liver Wind Agitating Internally Due to Liver-Yang Rising View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Forceful, large-amplitude head tremor, severe dizziness with a feeling of falling, irritability and easy anger, flushed face and red eyes, throbbing or distending headache.
Tongue: Red body, stiff or trembling, possibly deviated, thin yellow or scanty coating. Pulse: Wiry and fine, possibly rapid.
Treatment principle: Subdues Liver-Yang, extinguishes Wind, and nourishes Liver and Kidney Yin to stop the tremor.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Liver-Yang-rising slide.

2. Wind-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Head tremor with a heavy, dizzy sensation, chest stuffiness or fullness, copious white frothy sputum, nausea or vomiting of phlegm.
Tongue: Normal or slightly pale body, swollen with teeth marks, white greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry and slippery.
Treatment principle: Transforms Phlegm, extinguishes Wind, and strengthens the Spleen to resolve Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. This site has no plain excess Wind-Phlegm slide on any deck, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

3. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Fine, mild head tremor (not violent shaking), fatigue and weakness, pale or sallow complexion, dizziness and palpitations, poor appetite. Worsens with overwork, improves with rest.
Tongue: Pale body, may be thin with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Qi and generates Blood to nourish the sinews and calm deficiency Wind.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36/REN-6. This site has no combined Qi-and-Blood-deficiency slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Kidney Essence Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fine, rhythmic head tremor that worsens with fatigue, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, poor memory and difficulty concentrating, dizziness and vertigo, tinnitus or gradual hearing loss, premature greying or hair loss.
Tongue: Pale, thin body with little or no coating, possible fine cracks. Pulse: Fine, deep, and weak at both rear positions.
Treatment principle: Nourishes Kidney-Essence to fill the Marrow Sea (brain) and support the sinews.
Note: moxa strongly indicated throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-Essence-deficiency slide.

5. Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Slow, weak head tremor, cold hands and feet, aversion to cold with desire for warmth, fatigue and low vitality, loose stools or undigested food in the stools.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, moist with teeth marks, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak.
Treatment principle: Warms Kidney-Yang and nourishes Yin to activate the sinews and subdue internal Wind.
Note: moxa strongly indicated throughout. This site has no plain organ-nonspecific Yang-deficiency slide — linked to the closest match, this site's own Kidney-Yang-deficiency slide, since the moxa-heavy treatment approach here is identical.
