Hyperlipidemia (High Cholesterol)

How Chinese medicine differentiates hyperlipidemia, the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs, and only as supportive care alongside lipid-management follow-up.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Cholesterol and cardiovascular risk need ongoing medical monitoring; acupuncture here is supportive lifestyle-pattern care, not a substitute for that monitoring.
General Acupuncture Points

The Six Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Phlegm-Dampness in the Middle-Burner

Clinical manifestations: Bloating and fullness in the upper abdomen after eating; a heavy sensation in the body and limbs; a greasy, sticky sensation in the mouth with no thirst; the head feels heavy, as if wrapped in cloth; loose, sticky stools.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, thick white greasy coating, excessively moist. Pulse: Slippery, often soggy.
Treatment principle: Transform Phlegm-Dampness, clearing the turbid obstruction that raises blood lipids.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site has a Phlegm-Dampness-in-the-Middle-Burner category, so no pattern link is given here.

2. Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A feeling of heaviness in the body and head; a greasy, sticky sensation in the mouth with a bitter taste; chest and upper abdominal stuffiness; dark yellow, scanty urine; thirst with little desire to drink.
Tongue: Red body with a yellow, greasy coating, thickest in the centre and root. Pulse: Soggy-rapid or slippery-rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Damp-Heat from the Liver and Gallbladder.
Note: no moxa. Matches Damp-Heat in the Gall Bladder and Liver on the internal-pattern level — heaviness, a bitter taste and dark urine are shared, even though the deck slide doesn't name lipid levels specifically.

3. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Abdominal bloating, worse after eating; loose, unformed stools or watery diarrhea; poor appetite or lack of taste; heaviness in the body and limbs; fatigue and lack of energy; drowsiness, especially after meals.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slow, soft and weak, especially at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Strengthen the Spleen, drain Dampness, regulate water metabolism.
Note: moxa applicable on the Tonify points. This pattern has no explicit Cold marker, so it is not linked to this site's \"Cold-Dampness invading the Spleen\" slide — no pattern link is given here.

4. Phlegm in the Chest

Clinical manifestations: A heavy, stuffy sensation in the chest; coughing with abundant white, sticky phlegm; a sensation of a lump in the throat; shortness of breath, worse when lying flat.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, thick white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Slippery, often with a wiry quality.
Treatment principle: Unblock chest Yang and dispel Phlegm.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site has a Phlegm-in-the-Chest category without an accompanying Fire or Mind-misting component, so no pattern link is given here.

5. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Night sweats and heat in the palms, soles, and chest; dizziness and ringing in the ears; lower back and knee soreness and weakness; dry eyes with blurred vision.
Tongue: Red, thin body with cracks, little or no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine, rapid, wiry; the left Chi weak, the left Guan thin.
Treatment principle: Nourish Liver and Kidney Yin while clearing deficiency Heat.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with Kidney- and Liver-Yin deficiency.

6. Kidney and Spleen Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Feeling cold, especially in the lower back and knees; chronic loose stools or early-morning diarrhea; swelling of the legs and ankles; tiredness and lack of energy; poor appetite and abdominal bloating after eating.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, puffy with teeth marks, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, weak, slow; both Chi positions feeble, right Guan weak.
Treatment principle: Warm and replenish Kidney-Yang while strengthening Spleen-Qi.
Note: moxa applicable. Direct match with Kidney- and Spleen-Yang deficiency.
