Increased Intracranial Pressure

How Chinese medicine differentiates increased intracranial pressure into the 4 patterns behind it, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

Increased intracranial pressure is a medical emergency (a possible brain bleed, tumor, or hydrocephalus) — it requires immediate emergency evaluation. Acupuncture has no role in the acute event and may only ever support recovery afterward, under medical supervision.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for increased intracranial pressure — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
DU-20Extinguishes interior Wind. Subdues Liver-Yang. Raises Yang.
LIV-3Subdues Liver-Yang. Extinguishes interior Wind. Promotes the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Promotes the function of the Liver and the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
The Four Patterns

1. Heat in the Blood

Clinical manifestations: A severe pounding headache, projectile vomiting, a flushed red face, nosebleeds or bleeding gums, an internal heat sensation worse at night, irritability and restlessness.
Tongue: Deep red with red spots or prickles, thin yellow dry coating. Pulse: Rapid, often wiry and forceful.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat from the Blood level, stop bleeding, and nourish Yin to counter the reckless Blood movement.
Note: Confirmed absent again: plain Heat-in-the-Blood has no matching deck slide on this site.

2. Phlegm Misting the Heart View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A heavy, foggy-headed sensation, mental dullness or confusion, nausea, chest stuffiness, rattling throat sounds.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, thick white greasy coating, may appear stiff or sluggish. Pulse: Slippery, like beads rolling on a string.
Treatment principle: Scour Phlegm and open the orifices to restore clear consciousness.

3. Qi and Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A fixed, stabbing headache that worsens with pressure, a dark or purplish complexion, irritability or emotional tension, distending chest or rib pain.
Tongue: Dark purple with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood and dispel stasis to unblock the brain collaterals.

4. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A dull headache with dizziness, blurred vision and dry eyes, night sweats, heat in the palms soles and chest, tinnitus and poor memory.
Tongue: Red, thin with cracks, little or no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine, rapid, possibly wiry, weak at the left Kidney position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney and Liver Yin to restore nourishment to the brain and anchor the deficiency-heat.
