Point	Key action
DU-14	Clears Heat. Releases the Exterior and expels exterior Wind. Regulates Nutritive and Defensive Qi.
L.I.-11	Clears Heat and cools Blood. Removes obstructions and Heat from the channel. Resolves Dampness.
L.I.-4	Expels exterior Wind and releases the Exterior. Promotes the diffusing of Lung-Qi, regulates the Defensive Qi and sweating. Stops pain.
G.B.-20	Expels exterior Wind. Extinguishes interior Wind. Subdues Liver-Yang.

The Four Patterns

1. Qi Level Heat

Clinical manifestations: High fever without chills, intense thirst for cold drinks, profuse sweating, irritability and restlessness, flushed face, dark scanty urine, severe headache and stiff neck.

Tongue: C Pulse: l

Treatment principle: red body with yellow dry coating, possible prickles in the centre,overflowing and rapid, large and forceful

2. Heat in the Ying Level

Clinical manifestations: Fever that worsens at night, mental restlessness or insomnia, confused or delirious speech, faint reddish skin rashes, dry mouth with little desire to drink.

Tongue: C Pulse: o

Treatment principle: deep crimson body, dry, with little or no coating,fine and rapid

3. Toxic-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Loss of consciousness or deep stupor, convulsions, seizures or muscle spasms, extreme neck stiffness and rigidity, persistent high fever, dark or purple-red tongue, severe unrelenting headache.

Treatment principle: red body with prickly thorns and dry yellow coating,rapid and forceful

4. Qi and Yin Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Low-grade fever that worsens in the afternoon or evening, deep fatigue and weakness, night sweats, pale complexion, dry mouth with little desire to drink, dizziness and mental fogginess.

Treatment principle: red or pale-red body with thin, dry coating,fine, weak, and rapid
