Menopausal Edema

How Chinese medicine differentiates menopausal edema into the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Edema and Swollen Ankle pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. New swelling alongside shortness of breath or chest pain needs prompt medical evaluation to rule out a heart or kidney cause before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

The Five Patterns

1. Kidney Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Swelling in the legs and ankles worse in cold weather, frequent nighttime urination, feeling cold throughout the body especially the lower body, fatigue and low spirits, cold hands and feet.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender body with teeth marks and wet white coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, and weak, especially at the rear (Chi) positions.
Treatment principle: Warms Kidney-Yang and transforms Qi to move water, addressing the root of the edema.
Note: moxa strongly indicated throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-Yang-deficiency slide.

2. Spleen Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Pitting edema in the lower limbs, poor appetite and abdominal bloating after meals, loose stools with undigested food, feeling cold with cold hands and feet, heaviness and fatigue especially in the morning.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender with scalloped edges and white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak, especially at the right Guan (Spleen) position.
Treatment principle: Warms Spleen-Yang, transforms Dampness, and promotes urination to resolve edema.
Note: moxa strongly indicated throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Spleen-Yang-deficiency slide.

3. Deficiency of Both Kidney Yin and Yang

Clinical manifestations: Swelling in the ankles and legs worse with fatigue, alternating chills and hot flushes, night sweats, lower back cold and aching, frequent nighttime urination, deep fatigue and lack of vitality, cold hands and feet mixed with heat in the palms, soles, and chest.
Tongue: Pale, puffy-tender body with teeth marks and cracks, thin white coat, may be partially peeled. Pulse: Deep, fine, weak, weakest at the Chi (rear) positions, may be slightly rapid if Yin deficiency predominates or slow if Yang predominates.
Treatment principle: Warming Yang and nourishing Yin to restore fluid balance and reduce edema.
Note: moxa applicable on the Yang-tonifying points. This site's Kidney deck has separate Yin- and Yang-deficiency slides but no combined Kidney-Yin-and-Yang-deficiency slide — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Kidney Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Mild, soft puffiness around the ankles or eyelids, night sweats, heat in the palms, soles, and chest, dry mouth and throat especially at night, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, dizziness or ringing in the ears.
Tongue: Red, thin body with little or no coating, dry surface with possible cracks. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourishes Kidney-Yin and clears deficiency Heat, gently draining mild fluid retention without harming Yin.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency slide.

5. Damp-Heat in the Liver Channel View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Bitter taste in the mouth, genital itching or swelling, irritability and rib-side distension, dark scanty urine, edema worse with emotional stress.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, yellow greasy coating thicker at the center and root. Pulse: Wiry, slippery, and rapid.
Treatment principle: Drains Damp-Heat from the Liver and Gallbladder channels, easing edema, genital discomfort, and irritability.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Liver slide, which this session confirmed is genital-specific in its own text — a direct match here, reinforced by the source's own genital itching/swelling symptom.
