Mottled Skin

How Chinese medicine differentiates mottled skin — a visible cry for help from deeper organ systems failing to nourish the skin — into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Dark Face and Macules pages by texture (rough or scaly, not just pigmented). Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A high fever with dry mottled skin unrelieved by sweating needs prompt medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for mottled skin — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action

L.I.-4Expels exterior Wind. Stops pain. Removes obstructions from the channel.
The Six Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry, rough, scaly fish-scale-like skin, fixed stabbing pain worsening at night, dark or dull complexion, possible history of injury, menstrual pain or clots.
Tongue: Dark purple or dusky body with possible stasis spots, distended dark sublingual veins. Pulse: Choppy or wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood, remove stasis, restore circulation to nourish the skin.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide.

2. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Dry, rough, scaly skin with a pale sallow tone, persistent fatigue, pale complexion/lips/nail beds, dizziness, poor appetite, heart palpitations, weakness.
Tongue: Pale body, possibly thin or showing teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine, weak, lacking force.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi and Blood, strengthen the Spleen to restore skin nourishment.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. This site has no combined Qi-and-Blood-deficiency slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

3. Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry, cracked, scaly fish-scale skin feeling hot, night sweats, heat in the palms/soles/chest, dry mouth with desire for small sips, flushed cheekbones, restlessness, insomnia.
Tongue: Red, thin body with cracks, little or no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine, rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin, generate fluids, moisten dryness, clear deficiency Heat.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own plain Kidney-Yin-deficiency slide — this pattern's own hot/dry/night-sweats picture fits the plain Yin-deficiency framing rather than the more intense Empty-Heat-blazing slide.

4. Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Skin feels rough, greasy, oily to the touch, body feels heavy and sluggish, head feels wrapped, sticky or bitter mouth taste, poor appetite, chest and abdominal stuffiness, dark yellow scanty urine.
Tongue: Red body with yellow greasy coating difficult to scrape. Pulse: Soggy-rapid or slippery-rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Damp-Heat, transform Dampness, disperse Heat to unblock the skin.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Damp-Heat-invading-the-Spleen slide, reused again on the skin-manifestation level after Hand Eczema and Skin Tightness this project.

5. Spleen Deficiency With Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Rough, puffy, mottled skin, fatigue and lack of energy, poor appetite or taste loss, loose unformed stools, heaviness in the body and limbs, drowsiness after meals, bloating.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy, slow, possibly slippery, soft, lacking force.
Treatment principle: Strengthen the Spleen, drain Dampness, tonify Qi.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. This site has no combined Spleen-deficiency-with-Dampness slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

6. Bright Yang Stomach Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: High fever unrelieved by sweating, intense thirst with craving for cold water, flushed red face, dry scaly mottled skin feeling hot, irritability and restlessness, profuse ineffective sweating, constipation.
Tongue: Red body with dry yellow coating, possible early cracks. Pulse: Overflowing, surging, rapid, strongest at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Clear blazing Stomach Heat, preserve fluids, cool the skin.
Note: no moxa; this is a high-fever emergency-adjacent presentation needing medical evaluation regardless. Matched to this site's own Heat-obstructing-the-Large-Intestine slide as a paraphrase of this Yangming Fu-stage pattern, the same logic used for Pancreatitis in an earlier batch.
