Pain Along the Inner Thigh

How Chinese medicine differentiates pain along the inner thigh — distinct from Groin Pain already covered — the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Inner thigh pain with swelling, fever, or sudden severe onset needs medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for inner thigh pain — 9 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

LR-3Soothes Liver-Qi and moves Blood.
SP-10Invigorates Blood and dispels stasis.

The Five Patterns

1. Liver-Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed stabbing pain along the inner thigh, pain worsens with pressure, dark menstrual blood with clots, emotional stress aggravates symptoms.
Tongue: Dark purple body with stasis spots on the sides, distended sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Soothe Liver-Qi and relieve stagnation, move Qi and alleviate pain, invigorate Blood and dispel stasis.

Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide.

2. Stagnation of Cold in the Liver Channel View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Cold cramping pain along the inner thigh, pain worsens with cold exposure and improves with warmth, lower abdominal pain radiating to the groin or inner thigh, scrotal contraction or testicular cold pain in men.
Tongue: Pale body with a white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, wiry and slow or tight.
Treatment principle: Dispel Cold, move Qi, alleviate pain, warm the Lower Burner and dispel Cold.
Note: moxa strongly indicated given the Cold. Direct match with this site's own Stagnation-of-Cold-in-the-Liver-channel slide — its scrotal/testicular referral content matches this pattern's own presentation.

3. Damp-Heat in the Liver Channel View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Burning pain along the inner thigh, redness and swelling, bitter taste in the mouth, dark scanty urine, genital itching or dampness, feeling of heaviness.
Tongue: Red body with red sides, yellow greasy coating thicker at centre and root. Pulse: Wiry, slippery, rapid.
Treatment principle: Drain excess Fire from the Liver and Gallbladder, clear Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner, clear Heat from the Liver channel.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Liver slide — its genital itching and dampness content genuinely matches this pattern's own genital symptoms, unlike the non-genital conditions where this slide has been declined.

4. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dull aching pain along the inner thigh worse at night, night sweats and heat in the palms soles and chest, dry eyes dizziness and tinnitus.
Tongue: Red, thin body with cracks, little or no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine and rapid, possibly wiry, weak in left Chi and Guan.
Treatment principle: Nourish Liver and Kidney Yin, brighten the eyes, clear Liver-Heat.
Note: no moxa. Direct match, reusing the well-established Kidney-and-Liver-Yin-deficiency slide.

5. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Mild dull ache that improves with rest, worsens with fatigue and overexertion, pale complexion and fatigue, dizziness or lightheadedness, poor appetite or loose stools.
Tongue: Pale body, may be thin or have teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine, weak, may feel empty.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, nourish Blood, strengthen the Spleen, addressing the root deficiency failing to nourish the channels.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. No deck on this site combines Qi and Blood deficiency into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.
