Pale Inner Eyelids

How Chinese medicine differentiates pale inner eyelids (conjunctiva) — a classic Blood-deficiency sign checked on physical exam — into the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Pale Face and Pale Lips and Nail Beds pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Pale conjunctiva alongside fatigue or breathlessness needs medical evaluation to rule out anemia and its underlying cause before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used when pale inner eyelids are found — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Five Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Pale inner eyelids, sallow or pale complexion, pale lips and nail beds, dizziness or lightheadedness, heart palpitations or poor memory, scanty menstrual flow with pale blood.
Tongue: Pale, thin body with thin white coating. Pulse: Fine, weak, and forceless.
Treatment principle: Direct nourishment of Blood to restore tissue color.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. This site has no organ-nonspecific Blood-deficiency slide on any deck — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

2. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Pale inner eyelids together with a pale, sallow face, persistent fatigue that worsens with any exertion, shortness of breath and reluctance to speak, heart palpitations and dizziness, poor appetite and reduced food intake.
Tongue: Pale body, possibly with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, especially at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Tonify both Qi and Blood simultaneously since weak Qi fails to propel Blood to surface tissues.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. This site has no combined Qi-and-Blood-deficiency slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

3. Spleen Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Poor appetite, abdominal bloating that worsens after eating, loose or soft stools, fatigue and heaviness in the limbs, dull, pale or sallow complexion.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender with tooth marks; thin white coating. Pulse: Soft and weak at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Strengthen the Spleen's transformative capacity since weak digestion reduces Blood production.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36/BL-20. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Spleen-Qi-deficiency slide.

4. Liver Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Blurred or diminished vision, dry eyes, brittle, dry, or ridged nails, dizziness or lightheadedness, pale face lacking color.
Tongue: Pale body, especially at the sides, thin, slightly dry with thin white coating. Pulse: Fine, choppy, often wiry at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Liver-Blood specifically since the Liver opens into the eyes and stores Blood nourishing ocular tissues.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Liver-Blood-deficiency slide.

5. Kidney Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Night sweats, heat in the palms, soles, and chest, dry mouth and throat, sore and weak lower back and knees, tidal flushing in the afternoon or evening.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry with little or no coating, visible cracks possible. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish deep Yin reserves since depleted Yin cannot generate sufficient Blood, resulting in thin, pale conjunctiva.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency slide.
