Poor Coordination (Ataxia)

How Chinese medicine differentiates unsteady gait and poor motor coordination into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Essential Tremor and Vertigo pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. New or worsening incoordination needs a neurological work-up before assuming any TCM pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for poor coordination — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Six Patterns

1. Liver Wind Agitating Internally Due to Liver Yang Rising View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Severe dizziness with a sensation of falling, tremor of the hands or head, stiff neck with distending headache, irritability and easy anger, flushed face and red eyes, tongue red, stiff, trembling, possibly deviated.
Tongue: Red body, stiff or trembling, possibly deviated, thin yellow or scanty coating. Pulse: Wiry and fine, often rapid, may be forceful at the Cun and Guan positions.
Treatment principle: Anchors Liver-Yang, extinguishes Wind, nourishes Yin.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's own Liver-Yang-rising slide, flagged since the additional Wind-agitation/tremor component here is a more advanced stage that slide's own text doesn't separately name.

2. Liver Blood and Kidney Essence Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Unsteady gait worse with fatigue, dizziness and blurred vision, lower back soreness and weak knees, poor memory and difficulty concentrating, thinning hair, premature greying, loose teeth.
Tongue: Pale, thin body with possible fine cracks, thin white coating. Pulse: Deep, fine, and weak, especially at the Chi positions.
Treatment principle: Replenishes Liver-Blood and Kidney-Essence to nourish the sinews and Marrow.
Note: moxa applicable. This site has no combined Liver-Blood-and-Kidney-Essence slide; linked to the Kidney-Essence-deficiency slide, whose own text explicitly names poor memory, loose teeth, and hair thinning/greying, flagged for the Liver-Blood component not being separately isolated.

3. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Unsteady gait worse with fatigue, dry eyes and blurred vision, night sweats and heat in the palms and soles.
Tongue: Red, thin, cracked with little or no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine, rapid, and wiry.
Treatment principle: Deeply nourishes Liver and Kidney Yin, anchors Empty-Wind.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-and-Liver-Yin-deficiency slide.

4. Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Body and limbs feel heavy and sluggish, head feels heavy and wrapped, unsteady gait like walking through mud, sticky, bitter taste, poor appetite, loose sticky stools, low-grade afternoon fever with thirst but little desire to drink.
Tongue: Red body with thick yellow greasy coating, especially centre and root, may be swollen with teeth marks. Pulse: Soggy-rapid or slippery-rapid.
Treatment principle: Clears Heat and drains Dampness, regulates Qi and harmonizes the middle burner.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's own Damp-Heat-invading-the-Spleen slide, its general Damp-Heat match.

5. Turbid Phlegm Blocks the Orifices View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Head feels heavy and wrapped, mental fog, dull thinking, confusion, slurred or impaired speech, nausea or vomiting of phlegm-like fluid, chest tightness and upper abdominal bloating.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, thick white greasy-slippery coat. Pulse: Slippery and often wiry, like beads rolling under the fingers.
Treatment principle: Scours Phlegm and opens the orifices, clears Heat and transforms Phlegm, regulates Qi and resolves turbidity.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's own Phlegm-misting-the-Mind slide, the closest available match.

6. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pain in the limbs or head, stiffness and jerky movements worsening at night, dark or purplish lips and nails, purple spots on the tongue or distended dark veins underneath, rough, dry, or scaly skin.
Tongue: Purple or dusky body with stasis spots and distended dark sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Choppy, rough and uneven, may be wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorates Blood and dispels stasis, nourishes Blood to restore circulation to the sinews and brain.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide per this session's discoloration-marker rule.
