Premature Atrial Contractions

How Chinese medicine differentiates premature atrial contractions — a skipped or extra heartbeat felt as a flutter or jump — into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Arrhythmia, Sinus Tachycardia, and Sick Sinus Syndrome pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. New, worsening, or frequent skipped beats — especially with chest pain, fainting, or shortness of breath — need cardiac evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

The Six Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Heart fluttering or skipped beats worse after exertion, extreme fatigue, pale or sallow complexion with pale lips and nail beds, dizziness, poor appetite, loose stools, insomnia with vivid dreams.
Tongue: Pale, possibly thin body with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, especially at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Qi, nourishes Blood, strengthens the Spleen.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36/BL-15. This site has no combined Qi-and-Blood-deficiency slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

2. Empty-Heat Caused by Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations with a chest heat sensation, worse in the evening or night, night sweats, five-palm heat, dry mouth and throat with a preference for small sips, restlessness, irritability, sleep trouble, malar flush.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry body with cracks, little or no coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourishes Yin, nourishes Blood, tonifies Heart-Qi.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency-Empty-Heat-blazing slide — the same Empty-Heat framing throughout.

3. Damp-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations with a missed or extra beat sensation, chest stuffiness or heaviness, copious white phlegm easy to cough, dizziness, heavy or foggy head.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, thick white greasy coat, wet surface. Pulse: Slippery or soggy, at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Regulates Qi, transforms Phlegm, dries Dampness.
Note: no moxa. This site has no plain Damp-Phlegm slide on any deck, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session (the Heart deck's own Phlegm slides are Fire- or Mind-clouding-framed, not this plain Damp-Phlegm picture) — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Heart Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Stabbing or pricking chest pain in a fixed location, irregular or skipped palpitations, purple or dark lips and nails, chest tightness, pain radiating to the shoulder, back, or inner left arm.
Tongue: Dark or purple body with stasis spots, distended dark blue-purple sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Choppy or knotted, especially at the left Cun position.
Treatment principle: Invigorates Blood, dispels stasis, moves Qi, opens the chest.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Heart-Blood-stasis slide via the established discoloration-marker rule.

5. Liver Qi Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations worse with emotional stress, chest or rib-side distension and bloating, frequent sighing, irritability, mood swings, throat-lump sensation.
Tongue: Normal or slightly dark body, red or purplish sides, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry, taut like a guitar string, most prominent at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Courses the Liver, resolves constraint, moves Qi, invigorates Blood.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Liver-Qi-stagnation slide.

6. Heart Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations worse with exertion, cold hands and feet with aversion to cold, bright pale or white face, chest stuffiness or mild pain.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender body with teeth marks, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, weak, especially at the left Cun position, may be knotted.
Treatment principle: Warms Yang, disperses Cold, tonifies Heart-Qi.
Note: moxa strongly indicated throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Heart-Yang-deficiency slide.
