Premature Ventricular Contractions

How Chinese medicine differentiates PVCs into the 6 patterns behind it, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Premature Atrial Contractions page β€” only 2 of 6 patterns overlap. Acupuncture only β€” no herbs.

Frequent PVCs, or any accompanying chest pain, fainting, or breathlessness, need a cardiology evaluation β€” acupuncture may only ever be used alongside that care, never in place of it.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) β€” 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

1. Qi and Yin Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations with skipped or missed beats, fatigue that worsens with exertion, dry mouth, night sweats, warm sensations in the palms soles and chest.
Tongue: Red or pale-red, thin or absent coating, possibly cracked and dry. Pulse: Fine and weak, often rapid.
Treatment principle: Restore reserves of Qi and Yin while calming the spirit.

Tongue: Pale, puffy with teeth marks, moist white coat, tip may be slightly redder. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak, especially weak at the proximal position.
Treatment principle: Restore foundational warmth so Kidney-Yang can adequately warm the Heart.

Clinical manifestations: Stabbing or fixed chest pain, forceful or irregular palpitations, purple or dark lips and nails, anxiety during episodes, pain radiating to the shoulder or inner arm.
Tongue: Purple or dark-red with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Choppy or knotted, felt most clearly at the left front position.
Treatment principle: Move Blood circulation and dissolve the congealed accumulations obstructing the Heart.

4. Liver Qi Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations triggered by emotional stress, rib-side distension, frequent sighing, irritability and a short temper, chest tightness.
Tongue: Normal or slightly dark, red or purple sides, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry, taut like a guitar string.
Treatment principle: Restore smooth Qi flow through the chest to steady the emotional trigger.

5. Phlegm-Dampness in the Middle-Burner

Clinical manifestations: A heavy stuffy chest with palpitations, upper abdominal fullness after eating, nausea, a heavy sluggish body, drowsiness.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with teeth marks, thick white greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery, may be slow or soggy.
Treatment principle: Strengthen digestion and transform the Dampness that has congealed into Phlegm obstructing the Heart.
Note: Confirmed absent again: standalone Phlegm-Dampness-in-the-Middle-Burner has no matching deck slide on this site.

6. Phlegm-Fire Harassing the Heart View full pattern →
