Scanty Urination

How Chinese medicine differentiates scanty urination — reduced urine volume, distinct from Dark Urine and Cloudy Urine already covered, which are about colour and clarity rather than volume — the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A sudden drop in urine output, especially with swelling or breathlessness, needs prompt medical evaluation (kidney function must be checked) before assuming a simple pattern.

The Five Patterns

1. Spleen-Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Poor appetite, abdominal bloating, loose watery stools with undigested food, fatigue and heaviness in the limbs, pale clear urine.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender body with teeth marks and white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Warm Spleen-Yang and restore the organ's transforming power to move fluids into the Bladder.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Spleen-Yang-deficiency slide.

2. Damp-Heat in the Bladder View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Burning or stinging pain during urination, dark yellow or cloudy turbid urine, urgent need but scanty output, lower abdominal fullness, thirst without desire to drink.
Tongue: Red body with yellow greasy coating thickest at the root. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and drain Dampness to smooth Bladder function and reduce pain.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Bladder slide.

3. Kidney-Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Scanty clear urine, leg or ankle swelling, cold aching lower back and knees, cold lower body, fatigue and low spirits.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender body with teeth marks and wet white coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak at the rear positions.
Treatment principle: Powerfully warm Kidney-Yang and reignite the Ming Men fire to drive fluid transformation.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-Yang-deficiency slide.

4. Damp-Heat Invading the Spleen View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Scanty dark yellow urine, bitter or sticky taste, nausea and poor appetite, heavy sensation in the body and limbs, upper abdominal stuffiness and fullness.
Tongue: Red body with thick yellow greasy coating at the centre and root. Pulse: Soggy-rapid or slippery-rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and drain Dampness to restore the Spleen's processing function.
Note: no moxa given the Heat. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Damp-Heat-invading-the-Spleen slide.

5. Cold-Damp Invading the Spleen View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Heavy feeling in the body and limbs, bloating and upper abdominal fullness, loose stools, fatigue and drowsiness, reduced urine output.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, thick white greasy excessively moist coating. Pulse: Soggy or slippery and slow, weak at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Warmly dry Dampness and disperse Cold to restore Spleen-Yang's fluid transport capacity.
Note: moxibustion central to this pattern (SP-9 and ST-36 both moxa'd to warm and dry). Matched to this site's own Cold-Dampness-invading-the-Spleen slide via the same Cold-plus-Damp presentation, consistent with the Sticky Taste in the Mouth precedent (batch 31).
