Dark Urine

How Chinese medicine differentiates dark urine — distinct from Cloudy Urine already covered, which is about turbidity rather than colour — the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Persistently dark urine (especially with yellowing of the skin or eyes) needs medical evaluation — liver, gallbladder, and kidney causes must be ruled out — before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for dark urine — 12 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Four Patterns

1. Damp-Heat in the Bladder View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dark yellow or cloudy urine, burning or stinging urination, lower abdominal pressure, urgent but scanty output, little thirst.
Tongue: Red body with thick yellow greasy coating at the root. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and drain Fire from the Lower Burner, promote urination.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Bladder slide.

2. Damp-Heat in the Liver View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Bitter mouth taste, rib-side pain and distension, genital itching or dampness, aversion to greasy food.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry, slippery, rapid.
Treatment principle: Drain Liver and Gall Bladder Fire, clear Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Gall-Bladder-and-Liver slide — the bitter taste, rib-side pain and genital-dampness content lines up directly, continuing the established core-plus-genital-addon convention (Jaundice, Cloudy Urine, Flank Pain, Ear Eczema).

3. Heart Fire Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Mouth or tongue ulcers with red raised edges, mental restlessness and irritability, insomnia or vivid dreams, flushed face, thirst for cold drinks.
Tongue: Red body with a distinctly redder tip and red prickles, yellow dry coating. Pulse: Rapid, forceful, overflowing.
Treatment principle: Clear Heart-Fire, nourish Yin, guide Fire downward through urination.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Heart-Fire-blazing slide.

4. Body Fluids Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Scanty dark urine without burning pain, dry mouth/lips/throat, dry rough skin, dry stools or constipation, thirst with desire to drink.
Tongue: Red, dry, thin body with cracks and minimal coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin and generate fluids, moisten dryness, clear Empty-Heat.
Note: moxa applicable, light technique given the dryness. This site's organ-nonspecific Body-Fluids-deficiency category is confirmed absent again here (first found for Dry Lips), so no pattern link is given — points still link fine individually.
