Spontaneous Sweating

How Chinese medicine differentiates spontaneous sweating — sweating without exertion, heat, or stress, distinct from Night Sweats and Watery and Thin Sweat already covered — the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. New unexplained sweating, especially with weight loss, palpitations, or fever, needs medical evaluation (thyroid and other causes must be ruled out) before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for spontaneous sweating — 12 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Five Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Exterior-Empty

Clinical manifestations: Sweating with minimal exertion, aversion to wind or drafts, mild chills and low-grade fever, headache and body aches, runny nose, pale complexion, shortness of breath.
Tongue: Pale or normal light-red body with thin white coating. Pulse: Floating and moderate, soft and relaxed.
Treatment principle: Reinforce Lung and Spleen Qi and stabilize the Exterior, stopping spontaneous sweating.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. This classic Wei-Qi/Exterior-deficiency concept has no matching organ-level slide on this site — a new confirmed-absent category — so no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

2. Qi and Yin Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Persistent fatigue and weakness, shortness of breath worsened by exertion, dry mouth with little desire to drink, warm sensation in the palms/soles/chest, sweating worsened by activity.
Tongue: Red or pale-red body, thin or absent coating, possibly cracked. Pulse: Fine and weak, possibly rapid.
Treatment principle: Boost Qi and nourish Yin, astringe sweat and calm the spirit.
Note: moxa applicable, light technique given the Yin component. This site's decks have no combined Qi-and-Yin-deficiency slide (confirmed absent many times before), so no pattern link is given — points still link fine individually.

3. Empty-Heat Caused by Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sticky thick sweat, afternoon or evening heat sensation, warm palms/soles/chest, dry mouth worse in the evening, flushed cheekbones, restlessness and irritability.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry body with cracks, little or no coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid, weak on deep pressure.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin, drain deficiency Fire, and secure the Exterior to stop sticky daytime sweating.
Note: no moxa given the Empty-Heat. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency-Empty-Heat-blazing slide.

4. Liver and Gallbladder Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sticky sweat staining clothing, bitter taste in the mouth, nausea and aversion to greasy food, right-sided rib distension or pain.
Tongue: Red body with red sides, thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry, slippery, rapid.
Treatment principle: Drain Damp-Heat from the Liver and Gall Bladder, clearing internal steam that drives sticky sweating.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Gall-Bladder-and-Liver slide via the core bitter-taste/rib-pain presentation.

5. Heart-Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Spontaneous sweating often with mental stress, palpitations or a racing heart sensation, sleep difficulty with vivid dreams, poor memory and forgetfulness, pale face/lips/nail beds, easily startled or mildly anxious.
Tongue: Pale, possibly thin, with thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, possibly choppy, thin at the left Cun position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Heart-Blood and Spleen-Qi, calm the Mind, anchor sweat by strengthening fluid retention.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Heart-Blood-deficiency slide.
