Sticky Taste in the Mouth

How Chinese medicine differentiates a sticky taste in the mouth — distinct from Sweet Taste and Bitter Taste already covered — the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A persistent sticky taste with unexplained weight change needs medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for a sticky taste in the mouth — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
ST-36Tonifies Qi, strengthens the Spleen.
SP-9Reduces or evens the flow to resolve Dampness.
SP-6Tonifies the Spleen, resolves Dampness.
ST-44Clears Heat, eases the bitter sticky mouth.
L.I.-11Clears Heat and drains Dampness.
ST-40Transforms Phlegm-Dampness.
REN-12Regulates the middle burner.
BL-20Tonifies Spleen-Qi at the root level.
KI-3Nourishes Kidney-Yin to anchor Heat and promote fluid production.
The Five Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Sticky or greasy sensation in the mouth, abdominal bloating worse after eating, loose or unformed stools, heaviness in the body and limbs, fatigue and lack of energy.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slow, soft and weak especially at right Guan.
Treatment principle: Strengthen Spleen-Qi and drain Dampness to restore fluid metabolism.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. No deck on this site combines Spleen-Qi deficiency with Dampness into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

2. Damp-Heat in Stomach and Spleen

Clinical manifestations: Sticky or slimy sensation with a bitter or sweet note, bloating and fullness in the upper abdomen, loose sticky or incomplete bowel movements, thirst with little desire to drink, heavy foggy feeling in the head and limbs.
Tongue: Red body, possibly swollen with teeth marks, thick yellow greasy coating especially at centre and root. Pulse: Soggy and rapid, often also slippery.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and drain Dampness from the middle burner to resolve the bitter sticky taste.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site combines Damp-Heat across both the Stomach and Spleen into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

3. Damp-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Copious white phlegm easy to cough up, thick white greasy pasty tongue coating, bland taste with no thirst, heaviness in the body and limbs, chest and upper abdominal stuffiness, dizziness and brain fog.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with scalloped tooth marks, wet surface, thick white greasy coat hard to scrape off. Pulse: Slippery, like a bead rolling through oil.
Treatment principle: Dry Dampness and transform Phlegm to lift chest oppression and restore fluid clarity.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site has a combined Damp-Phlegm category outside the Lungs, a confirmed and recurring absence, so no pattern link is given here.

4. Damp-Cold Phlegm View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sticky greasy mouth without thirst, cold hands and feet and aversion to cold, heaviness in the body and limbs, loose stools or watery phlegm easy to cough up, chest and upper abdominal stuffiness.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, thick white greasy wet coating. Pulse: Slippery, slow and deep, often soggy at right Guan.
Treatment principle: Warm the middle burner and dispel internal Cold to prevent Dampness from congealing into Phlegm.
Note: moxa applicable given the Cold. This site's Cold-Dampness-invading-the-Spleen slide covers the same Cold-plus-Damp presentation — aversion to cold, watery stools, cold limbs — so it is linked here.

5. Empty-Heat from Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry sticky mouth (not greasy), worsens in the evening or at night, heat sensation in the palms soles and chest, night sweats, thirst with desire to sip small amounts.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry body with cracks, little or no coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid, weak or hollow on deep pressure.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin and clear deficiency Heat to restore fluid production and moisture.
Note: no moxa given the Empty-Heat. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency-Empty-Heat-blazing slide.
