Sweet Taste in the Mouth

How Chinese medicine differentiates a sweet taste in the mouth — distinct from Bitter Taste in the Mouth already covered — the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A persistent sweet taste alongside excessive thirst or unexplained weight loss needs medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.

The Five Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Sticky sweet taste in the mouth, abdominal bloating especially after eating, loose or unformed stools, heaviness in the body and limbs, fatigue and lack of energy.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slow, soft and lacking force.
Treatment principle: Strengthen Spleen-Qi, drain accumulated Dampness, restore the Spleen's transformative capacity for fluids.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. No deck on this site combines Spleen-Qi deficiency with Dampness into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

2. Phlegm-Dampness in the Middle-Burner

Clinical manifestations: Sticky greasy sweet taste that coats the mouth, feeling of heaviness and sluggishness in the body, bloating and fullness in the upper abdomen after eating, no thirst or no desire to drink, excessive phlegm or mucus in the throat.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with teeth marks, thick white greasy coating, excessively moist. Pulse: Slippery, often soggy or slow, especially at right middle position.
Treatment principle: Dry Dampness, transform Phlegm, unblock the middle burner, restore the Spleen's transport function.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site has a combined Damp-Phlegm category outside the Lungs, a confirmed and recurring absence, so no pattern link is given here.

3. Stomach Fire/Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sweet taste mixed with bitterness, burning pain in the upper stomach, intense thirst for cold drinks, bad breath, swollen red or bleeding gums, excessive hunger or constant appetite.
Tongue: Red body (especially centre) with thick dry yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid, slippery and forceful, strongest at right middle position.
Treatment principle: Clear Stomach-Heat, cool internal fire, direct rebellious Qi downward.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Stomach-Heat-(or-Phlegm-Heat) slide.

4. Empty-Heat from Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sweet taste worse at night, dry mouth and throat, night sweats, five-palm heat, malar flush, thirst with desire to sip water.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry body with cracks, little or no coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish the body's cooling Yin fluids, clear Empty-Heat rising from deficiency, moisten internal dryness.
Note: no moxa given the Empty-Heat. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency-Empty-Heat-blazing slide.

5. Liver-Fire Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Bitter taste in the mouth more dominant than sweet, throbbing headache at the temples or crown, red painful or burning eyes, intense irritability and quick temper, flushed red face.
Tongue: Red body, especially redder at the sides, with dry yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid, forceful at left middle position.
Treatment principle: Drain excess Liver-Gallbladder Fire, smooth stagnant Qi flow, calm emotional turbulence.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Fire-blazing slide.
