Unsteadiness

How Chinese medicine differentiates unsteadiness (a feeling of imbalance, not true spinning) into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Vertigo, Dizziness and BPPV pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Sudden unsteadiness with slurred speech, facial droop, limb weakness, or a fall with head injury needs emergency assessment (possible stroke). Progressive unsteadiness needs a neurological work-up.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for unsteadiness (imbalance) — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

G.B.-20Expels exterior Wind. Extinguishes interior Wind. Subdues Liver-Yang.

Treatment principle: Dries Dampness, transforms Phlegm, extinguishes Wind and strengthens the Spleen.
Note: This site's decks have no Phlegm-Dampness-in-the-Middle-Burner slide — no pattern link is given here.
