Vaginal Itching

How Chinese medicine differentiates vaginal itching — distinct from Leukorrhea already covered — the three patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Vaginal itching with sores, unusual bleeding, or spreading skin changes needs medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for vaginal itching — 5 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
LR-5Luo-connecting point of the Liver channel, specifically indicated for genital itching and swelling.
LR-3Source point of the Liver, subdues rising Liver-Heat.
SP-6Regulates the Spleen and drains Dampness from the Lower Burner.
KI-3Source point of the Kidney channel, nourishes Kidney-Yin to moisten the lower orifices.
BL-23Back-Shu point of the Kidney, tonifies Kidney-Yin and supports the lower back.
BL-18Clears Liver-Heat, regulates Liver-Qi.
G.B.-34Harmonizes Liver and Gall Bladder, resolves Dampness.
The Three Patterns

1. Damp-Heat in the Liver Channel View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Intense genital itching with a burning or hot sensation, sticky foul-smelling yellow vaginal discharge, bitter taste in the mouth especially in the morning, dark yellow scanty urine that may feel hot, irritability and short temper.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, thick yellow greasy coating densest at centre and root. Pulse: Wiry, slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Drain excess Fire from the Liver and Gallbladder, clear Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Liver slide — the genital/vaginal-discharge presentation this slide's own content emphasizes is exactly this pattern, unlike the eyelid- or joint-related conditions elsewhere on this site where this same slide was declined as a mismatch.

2. Damp-Heat in the Lower Burner View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Yellow thick foul-smelling vaginal discharge, heaviness or dragging sensation in the lower abdomen and legs, dark scanty urine that may burn, sticky foul-smelling stools or diarrhea, thirst with no real desire to drink.
Tongue: Red body, slightly swollen, with a yellow greasy coating thickest at the root. Pulse: Slippery and rapid, more pronounced at the rear position.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and drain Dampness, separate the clear from the turbid, cool the Blood and dispel stasis.
Note: no moxa. This site's Damp-Heat-in-the-Gall-Bladder-and-Liver slide is the closest genital/urinary-discharge match, already reused for other Lower-Burner Damp-Heat presentations with the same discharge markers.

3. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry thin or whitish vulvar skin, itching that worsens at night, sensation of heat in the palms soles and chest, vaginal dryness with no or scanty discharge, dizziness and ringing in the ears, lower back and knee soreness.
Tongue: Red, thin body with cracks, little or no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine, rapid and wiry, weak in left Chi and Guan.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin, clear deficiency Heat, nourish Kidney-Yin.
Note: no moxa given the Empty-Heat. Direct match, reusing the well-established Kidney-and-Liver-Yin-deficiency slide.
