Vocal Cord Edema

How Chinese medicine differentiates vocal cord edema (swelling of the vocal cords) — distinct from Hoarseness (Loss of Voice) and Laryngitis already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Hoarseness lasting more than 2-3 weeks, or any sudden voice loss with breathing difficulty, needs an ENT evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for vocal cord edema — 12 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Six Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Wind-Heat Invading the Lungs View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sudden hoarseness onset, sore/dry throat, mild yellow phlegm, fever with mild chills, thirst.
Tongue: Red at the tip, body slightly red, thin yellow coating. Pulse: Floating and rapid.
Treatment principle: Disperse Wind-Heat, clear Heat, resolve toxicity.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Invasion-of-Lungs-by-Wind-Heat slide via the fever/sore-throat/yellow-phlegm symptom set.

2. Phlegm-Heat in the Lungs View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sticky yellow phlegm hard to expel, throat lump sensation, chest tightness, oppressive feeling, thirst for cold drinks.
Tongue: Red body, possibly swollen at the front, yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and transform Phlegm, descend Lung-Qi.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Phlegm-Heat-in-the-Lungs slide.

3. Spleen Deficiency With Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Hoarseness with sticky white phlegm, chronic fatigue/heaviness, poor appetite with bloating, pale puffy face, drowsiness especially after eating, limb heaviness.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with teeth marks, white greasy moist coating. Pulse: Soggy and slow, soft and weak.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, strengthen the Spleen, drain Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. This site has no combined Spleen-deficiency-with-Dampness slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over (most recently for Upper Back Pain, batch 41) — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Lung and Kidney Yin Deficiency With Empty Fire View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Hoarseness worse in the evening/night, dry scratchy throat with tickling, scanty sticky phlegm hard to cough, night sweats, warm palms/soles, lower back soreness, weak knees.
Tongue: Red, thin body with cracks, little/no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney and Lung Yin, astringe the Lungs, stop cough.
Note: no moxa given the Yin deficiency. Matched to this site's own Kidney-and-Lung-Yin-deficiency slide, the source's \"Empty Fire\" addition being descriptive elaboration rather than a separate pattern.

5. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Weak breathy voice that tires easily, fatigue/lack of energy, pale complexion/lips, poor appetite, shortness of breath on exertion.
Tongue: Pale body, thin, teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, nourish Blood, strengthen the Spleen.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. This is the generic Qi-and-Blood-deficiency picture, already confirmed absent as a standalone slide on this site many times over — no pattern link is given; points still link fine individually.

6. Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Marked throat swelling, sticky/greasy mouth sensation, thick greasy yellow tongue coating, body heaviness, chest/upper abdominal stuffiness.
Tongue: Red body with yellow greasy coating, difficult to scrape, possibly swollen with teeth marks. Pulse: Soggy-rapid or slippery-rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat, drain Dampness, transform turbidity.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's Damp-Heat-invading-the-Spleen slide via the fullness/heaviness/sticky-mouth symptom set, the same match used for Perioral Dermatitis, Petechiae, and Mouth Burning Sensation.
