Weak Bones

How Chinese medicine differentiates generalized bone weakness into the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Osteoporosis and Delayed Child Growth pages. Acupuncture only β€” no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students β€” it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Bone pain, fractures with minimal trauma, or rapidly worsening weakness needs medical assessment for an underlying bone or metabolic disease.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for generalized bone weakness or fragility β€” 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
BL-23Tonifies the Kidneys and nourishes the Kidney-Essence. Consolidates Kidney-Qi. Strengthens the lower back.
KI-3Tonifies the Kidneys (both Yin and Yang). Strengthens the Kidney’s receiving of Qi. Calms the Mind.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Promotes the function of the Liver and the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
The Four Patterns

1. Liver Blood and Kidney Essence Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Aching soreness in the lower back and knees; dizziness; tinnitus; loose teeth; premature graying; poor memory; fatigue; scanty menstruation.
Tongue: Pale, thin, possible fine cracks, thin white or scanty coat. Pulse: Deep, fine, weak; the left middle position wiry but forceless, both rear positions deep and weak.
Treatment principle: Nourishes Liver Blood and Kidney Essence to restore the bone marrow and skeletal foundation.
Note: no moxa contraindicated, but gentle technique preferred. No combined Liver-Blood-and-Kidney-Essence-deficiency slide exists β€” no pattern link is given here.

2. Kidney Essence Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Weak or aching bones; lower back and knee soreness; premature graying; loose teeth; poor memory; dizziness; tinnitus; frequent nighttime urination; developmental delays in children.
Tongue: Pale, thin, little or no coating, possible fine cracks. Pulse: Fine, deep, weak at both rear positions.
Treatment principle: Replenishes Kidney Essence and marrow to strengthen bone density and structure.
Note: moxa is appropriate.

3. Qi and Blood Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing bone pain, worsening at night; irritability; chest oppression; pain aggravated by pressure.
Tongue: Dark purple with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Wiry and choppy, taut and uneven.
Treatment principle: Invigorates Blood, dispels stasis and unblocks channels to restore nutrient flow to the bones.
Note: no moxa. No combined Qi-and-Blood-stagnation slide exists on this site's decks β€” no pattern link is given here.

4. Kidney and Spleen Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Cold, aching pain in the lower back and knees; aversion to cold with cold extremities; chronic loose stools or early-morning diarrhea; poor appetite; abdominal bloating; leg and ankle swelling.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, puffy, teeth-marked, white slippery coat. Pulse: Deep, weak, slow; feeble at the Kidney and Spleen positions.
Treatment principle: Warms Yang and restores the Spleen's and Kidney's warming function to nourish and fortify the bones.
Note: moxa is strongly indicated.
