Dark Lips

How Chinese medicine differentiates dark, purplish, or dusky lips into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Dry Lips and Pale Lips and Nail Beds pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Sudden or severe bluish-purple lips, especially with breathing difficulty, needs prompt medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for dark lips — 7 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
SP-10Cools Blood. Invigorates Blood and eliminates stasis.
LR-3Subdues Liver-Yang. Promotes the smooth flow of Liver-Qi. Invigorates Blood and regulates menstruation.
PC-6Opens the chest and moves Qi and Blood. Calms the Mind. Moves Liver-Qi.
REN-4Nourishes Blood and Yin. Strengthens the Kidneys. Benefits Original Qi.
DU-4Tonifies Kidney-Yang and warms the Gate of Life (Ming Men). Expels Cold.
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Original Qi.
PC-4Invigorates Blood and eliminates stasis. Cools Blood and stops bleeding. Removes obstructions from the channel and stops pain.
The Six Patterns

1. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed stabbing pain, pain worse at night, dark purplish lips, purple tongue with stasis spots and distended sublingual veins, dark menstrual blood with clots, rough, dry, or scaly skin.
Tongue: Purple or dusky body with stasis spots, distended dark sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Choppy or wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorates Blood and dispels stasis, moves Qi and alleviates pain, opens the chest and disperses stagnation.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide per this session's discoloration-marker rule.

2. Qi Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dark purple-red lips darkening with emotional upset, chest and rib-side distension or tightness, frequent sighing, irritability or mood swings, belching or passing gas that brings relief.
Tongue: Normal or slightly dusky body with a thin white coating. Pulse: Wiry, like a taut guitar string.
Treatment principle: Courses the Liver and resolves constraint, moves Qi and alleviates pain, invigorates Blood and dispels stasis.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Liver-Qi-stagnation slide.

3. Interior Cold View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Bluish-purple lips worsening with cold, cold hands and feet, abdominal pain better with warmth or pressure, preference for warm drinks and curling up.
Tongue: Pale, puffy body with teeth marks, white moist or slippery coating. Pulse: Deep and slow, or deep and tight.
Treatment principle: Warms the channels and disperses Cold, nourishes Blood and unblocks the vessels.
Note: moxa strongly indicated. The source names a general Interior-Cold picture without a specific organ; the underlying warmth-deficiency mechanism is closest to this site's own Kidney-Yang-deficiency slide, flagged for that attribution.

4. Qi Deficiency Causing Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Lips pale-purple rather than dark eggplant, deep fatigue and lack of strength, shortness of breath with reluctance to speak, fixed stabbing pain worsening with pressure, dull, dusky facial complexion with a greyish tinge.
Tongue: Pale-purple body with possible stasis spots, tooth marks, and a thin white coat. Pulse: Deep, fine or weak, and choppy.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Qi, invigorates Blood and dispels stasis, unblocks the channels and collaterals.
Note: moxa applicable. This site's decks have no combined Qi-deficiency-causing-Blood-stagnation slide; linked to the Spleen-Qi-deficiency slide for the Qi-deficiency root, flagged for the Blood-stasis component not being captured there (already linked separately in pattern 1 above).

5. Stomach Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sharp stabbing epigastric pain fixed in one spot, pain worsens after eating, black tarry stools, dark purplish tongue with stasis spots, feeling of fullness in the upper abdomen.
Tongue: Dark purple body with possible stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Choppy or wiry, especially tight at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Invigorates Blood and dispels stasis, moves Qi and alleviates pain, disperses accumulations and dissipates nodules.
Note: no moxa (black stools warrant urgent medical referral). This site has no organ-specific Stomach-Blood-stasis slide, so linked to the Liver-Blood-stasis slide as its general Blood-stasis default — this page's second, distinct use of that slide (fixed epigastric pain vs. pattern 1's more general presentation), within this page's two-pattern reuse cap.

6. Heart Vessel Obstructed View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Stabbing chest pain in a fixed location, pain radiating to the shoulder or inner arm, palpitations or a pounding heart sensation, dark or purplish lips.
Tongue: Purple or dark body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Knotted (slow with irregular pauses) or rough, especially at the left Cun (Heart) position.
Treatment principle: Invigorates Blood and dispels stasis, moves Qi and alleviates pain, opens the chest and disperses stagnation.
Note: no moxa; chest pain radiating to the arm warrants urgent medical evaluation before assuming this pattern. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Heart-vessel-obstructed slide.
