Lower Abdominal Masses

How Chinese medicine differentiates lower abdominal masses into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Uterine Fibroids and Ovarian Cysts pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Any new or growing abdominal mass needs proper medical imaging and evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for lower abdominal masses — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Six Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Qi and Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pain in the lower abdomen, pain worse with pressure, dark clotted menstrual blood, distending pain in the chest and rib area, irritability or mood swings.
Tongue: Purple or dark body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Moves Qi and breaks Blood stasis to dissolve masses.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the established discoloration-marker rule.

2. Blood Stagnation in the Lower Burner Caused by Cold View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, cold stabbing pain relieved by warmth and worsened by cold, dark purplish menstrual blood with clots, cold sensation in the lower belly, hands, and feet, pale or dusky complexion.
Tongue: Pale-purple or bluish-purple body with possible stasis spots and a white slippery coat. Pulse: Deep, tight, and choppy.
Treatment principle: Warms the Lower Burner, dispels Cold, invigorates Blood to dissolve masses.
Note: moxa strongly indicated given the Cold framing. This is a 2nd, still-within-cap use of this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide on this page via the discoloration-marker rule.

3. Damp-Phlegm in the Uterus

Clinical manifestations: Soft, movable lower abdominal mass, overweight or obesity, copious thick white vaginal discharge, heaviness and fullness in the lower abdomen, chest stuffiness and nausea, fatigue and drowsiness, poor appetite.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks and a white greasy coating thicker at the root. Pulse: Slippery, deep, and possibly soft.
Treatment principle: Dries Dampness, transforms Phlegm, strengthens the Spleen, regulates menstruation.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. This site has no dedicated Uterus deck, so no Damp-Phlegm-in-the-Uterus slide exists — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Heat and Blood Stagnation in the Lower Burner

Clinical manifestations: Fixed stabbing or cutting pain in the lower abdomen, lower abdominal hardness resisting pressure, irritability and mental restlessness, dark clotted menstrual blood, fever worsening at night, dark purple lips.
Tongue: Reddish-purple body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, dry yellow coating. Pulse: Deep, choppy, and rapid when Heat is pronounced.
Treatment principle: Breaks Blood and dispels stasis, purges Heat from the Lower Burner.
Note: no moxa; fever worsening at night with a fixed mass needs medical evaluation regardless. Rather than a 3rd use of the Liver-Blood-stasis slide (over this page's two-use cap), this pattern is left without a slide link as redundant with patterns 1 and 2 above; points still link fine individually.

5. Liver Blood and Kidney Essence Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Soft, movable lower abdominal mass, scanty pale menstruation or absent periods, lower back soreness and weak knees, dizziness, blurred or dim vision, premature greying or hair loss, fatigue and poor memory.
Tongue: Pale, thin body with possible fine cracks, thin white or scanty, slightly dry coating. Pulse: Deep, fine, and weak, the left Guan (Liver) position fine and slightly wiry without strength, both Chi (Kidney) positions deep and weak.
Treatment principle: Nourishes Liver-Blood and Kidney-Yin to replenish the Chong and Ren vessels and soften the mass.
Note: moxa applicable on REN-4. Linked to this site's own Kidney-and-Liver-Yin-deficiency slide, the closest match, with this pattern's Liver-Blood (rather than pure Liver-Yin) framing flagged as a nuance.

6. Toxic-Heat Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: Severe, fixed pain with a heat sensation in the mass, high fever and persistent intense heat, foul-smelling yellow purulent vaginal discharge, intense thirst with desire for cold drinks, restlessness and irritability.
Tongue: Deep red or crimson body with a thick, dry, yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid and forceful.
Treatment principle: Clears Heat and resolves toxicity, disperses swelling and dissipates nodules, invigorates Blood and alleviates pain.
Note: no moxa; high fever with a hot painful mass needs urgent medical evaluation regardless (possible abscess). This site has no standalone Toxic-Heat slide on any deck — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.
