Multiple Sclerosis

How Chinese medicine differentiates multiple sclerosis, the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs, and only as supportive care alongside neurology management.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Multiple sclerosis needs ongoing neurological management (disease-modifying therapy, relapse monitoring); acupuncture here is supportive symptom care, not a substitute for that.

The Five Patterns

1. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees; dry eyes and blurred vision; dizziness and tinnitus; night sweats with heat in the palms, soles, and chest; insomnia with restless, vivid dreams.
Tongue: Red, thin body with cracks, little or no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine, rapid, wiry; left Chi weak, left Guan thin and slightly wiry.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney and Liver Yin, replenish Essence, fill Marrow.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with Kidney- and Liver-Yin deficiency.

2. Spleen and Stomach Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Limb heaviness and weakness; poor appetite and bloating that worsens after eating; loose stools; shortness of breath and reluctance to speak; a sallow or pale complexion.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tooth-marked body, thin white coating. Pulse: Weak, soft, forceless, especially at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Tonify the Middle, augment Qi, raise sunken Yang.
Note: moxa applicable. Direct match with Stomach- and Spleen-Qi deficiency.

3. Damp-Heat Invading the Spleen View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Limb heaviness and weakness; stuffiness and fullness in the chest and upper abdomen; nausea and poor appetite; loose stools; a sticky or greasy taste in the mouth; thirst with little desire to drink.
Tongue: Red body with thick, yellow, greasy coating, densest in the centre and root. Pulse: Soggy and rapid, or slippery and rapid, especially at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat, drain Dampness, regulate Qi, harmonize the Middle Burner.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with Damp-Heat invading the Spleen.

4. Phlegm-Heat in the Middle Burner

Clinical manifestations: Epigastric fullness and nausea; dizziness and blurred vision; urinary retention or constipation; a bitter taste and sticky yellow sputum; a sensation of heat in the chest and abdomen.
Tongue: Red, swollen body, thick yellow greasy coating, especially at the centre. Pulse: Slippery and rapid, possibly wiry at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat, transform Phlegm, harmonize the Stomach.
Note: no moxa. This site's Stomach-Heat/Phlegm-Heat slide is framed around epigastric burning and excessive hunger, not the dizziness/blurred-vision/urinary-retention picture named here, so no pattern link is given here.

5. Qi Deficiency Causing Blood Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pain worsening with pressure or exertion; numbness or tingling in the limbs; a dark or dusky facial complexion; fatigue and heaviness worsening after mild activity; shortness of breath and reluctance to speak.
Tongue: Pale body with a dark or purplish tinge, possible stasis spots, teeth marks, thin white coat. Pulse: Deep, fine or weak, choppy.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, invigorate Blood, dispel stasis, unblock the channels.
Tonify Qi
Invigorate Blood
Note: moxa applicable on the Tonify-Qi points. No deck on this site combines Qi deficiency with Blood stagnation into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.
