Muscle Atrophy

How Chinese medicine differentiates muscle atrophy (wilting/Wei syndrome) — distinct from Weak Limbs and Muscle Weakness already covered, which are about strength rather than visible wasting — the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Supportive care only. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Progressive muscle wasting needs medical evaluation (neurological and other serious causes must be ruled out) before assuming a simple pattern; acupuncture here is supportive alongside that care, never a substitute for it.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for muscle atrophy — 13 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Resolves Dampness.
REN-6Tonifies Qi and Yang. Raises sinking Qi.
SP-9Regulates the Spleen. Resolves Dampness.
G.B.-34Promotes the smooth flow of Liver-Qi. Benefits the sinews.
BL-23Tonifies the Kidneys and nourishes Kidney-Essence.
BL-18Nourishes Liver-Blood. Benefits the sinews.
KI-3Tonifies the Kidneys (both Yin and Yang). Benefits Essence.
BL-13Stimulates the diffusing and descending of Lung-Qi.
LU-5Clears Lung-Heat. Promotes the descending of Lung-Qi.
L.I.-11Clears Heat and cools Blood.
L.I.-4Removes obstructions from the channel. Moves Qi and Blood.
SP-10Cools Blood. Invigorates Blood and eliminates stasis.
The Five Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Spleen and Stomach Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Weak, heavy limb sensation, poor appetite with bloating after meals, sallow or pale complexion, fatigue, shortness of breath, reluctance to speak, loose or poorly formed stools.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tooth-marked with thin white coating. Pulse: Weak, soft, forceless, especially at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen and Stomach Qi to generate nourishment for the muscles.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. This classical \"treat wilting by taking the Yangming\" pattern is matched to this site's own Stomach-and-Spleen-Qi-deficiency slide.

2. Damp-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Limb heaviness and numbness, slight swelling, chest and upper abdominal stuffiness, sticky or bitter mouth taste, dark scanty urine, thirst without desire to drink.
Tongue: Red body with thick, yellow, greasy coating. Pulse: Soggy-rapid or slippery-rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and dry Dampness to unblock the channels, restore Qi and Blood flow.
Note: no moxa. This pattern's own presentation (chest stuffiness, bitter taste, dark urine) doesn't cleanly match any single organ-specific Damp-Heat slide on this site — not Bladder-level (no urinary pain), not clearly Liver/Gallbladder (no rib pain) — so no pattern link is given rather than forcing an inexact fit; points still link fine individually.

3. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, dizziness and tinnitus, night sweats, heat in the palms/soles/chest, dry eyes with blurred vision.
Tongue: Red, thin body with cracks, little or no coating. Pulse: Fine, rapid, often wiry, weak at the left Chi position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin and moisten the sinews, clear deficiency Heat to support bone and muscle.
Note: no moxa given the Yin deficiency. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-and-Liver-Yin-deficiency slide.

4. Lung-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sudden onset after febrile illness, thirst with desire for cold drinks, dry cough with yellow phlegm, fever and body heat sensation, dry mouth and sore throat.
Tongue: Red body with dry yellow coating, possibly prickly papillae on the front third. Pulse: Rapid and slippery or overflowing at the right Cun position.
Treatment principle: Clear Lung-Heat and moisten dryness, restore fluid distribution to the limbs.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Lung-Heat slide — the classical \"Lung-Heat scorching the fluids causes wilting\" mechanism, matched on the same sudden-post-febrile-onset marker.

5. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pain in the atrophied limb, pain worsens at night or with inactivity, dark or purplish skin/lips/nails, visible distended veins, rough dry scaly skin.
Tongue: Purple or dusky body with stasis spots, distended dark sublingual veins. Pulse: Choppy or wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Qi and Blood, unblock the collaterals to restore local nutrition.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the well-established dark/purple stasis-spot-tongue marker.
