Prolapsed Bladder

How Chinese medicine differentiates a prolapsed bladder into the 6 patterns behind it, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Uterine Prolapse and Vaginal Prolapse pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

A visible vaginal bulge or difficulty emptying the bladder needs a gynecological or urological evaluation — acupuncture may only ever support that care, never replace pelvic floor treatment or surgery when needed.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for a prolapsed bladder (cystocele) — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
DU-20Extinguishes interior Wind. Subdues Liver-Yang. Raises Yang.
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Original Qi.
REN-6Tonifies Qi and Yang. Raises sinking Qi. Tonifies Original Qi.
The Six Patterns

1. Qi Collapsing or Qi Sinking View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A bearing-down heaviness, profound fatigue, chronic loose stools, a sensation of organ descent that worsens with standing or exertion.
Tongue: Pale, puffy with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Empty and weak, especially at the right Guan, disappears under firm pressure.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen-Qi and lift the sinking organs through upward-raising therapies.

2. Spleen and Kidney Qi Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Persistent tiredness, poor appetite with loose stools, sore lower back, weak knees, frequent nighttime urination, pelvic heaviness, cold extremities.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with teeth marks, white moist coating. Pulse: Deep, weak, fine, weak at the right Guan and both rear positions.
Treatment principle: Tonify both the Spleen's lifting force and the Kidney's anchoring capacity.
Note: Confirmed absent again: this site's kidney deck combines Kidney with Spleen only at the Yang-deficiency level, not the plain Qi-deficiency level.

3. Kidney Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sore weak lower back and knees, a dragging pelvic sensation, deep fatigue after exertion, dribbling urination, dizziness, tinnitus, frequent nighttime urination.
Tongue: Pale, slightly puffy with possible teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Deep and weak, especially at the rear positions.
Treatment principle: Warm and tonify Kidney-Yang to consolidate the lower burner and support the bladder mooring.

4. Spleen and Lung Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A weak chronic cough with thin watery phlegm, shortness of breath worse with exertion, poor appetite with bloating and loose stools, fatigue, a weak voice, reluctance to speak.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender with teeth marks, thin white slippery coating. Pulse: Weak overall, empty at the right Cun and Guan, weakens under pressure.
Treatment principle: Tonify both Spleen and Lung Qi to restore the upward-lifting capacity.

5. Liver Qi Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Rib-side distension or pain, irritability, mood swings, frequent sighing, a lower-abdominal pressure or dragging sensation that worsens with emotional stress, premenstrual aggravation.
Tongue: Normal or slightly dark with red or purple sides, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry, taut, especially at the left Guan.
Treatment principle: Smooth the Liver-Qi flow to restore upward movement and prevent stuck Qi creating downward pressure.

6. Damp-Heat in the Lower Burner View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Burning or stinging urination, a heavy dragging sensation in the lower abdomen, cloudy dark yellow urine, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, a yellow greasy tongue coating especially at the back.
Tongue: Red with a yellow greasy coating thickest at the root, slightly swollen. Pulse: Slippery and rapid, often soggy, more pronounced at the rear position.
Treatment principle: Clear Damp-Heat from the lower burner while reducing the downward pressure.
