Urinary and Fecal Incontinence

How Chinese medicine differentiates general urinary and fecal incontinence — a broader picture than the stress-triggered leakage covered on the Stress Urinary Incontinence page — the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. New or worsening incontinence needs medical evaluation (neurological, structural, and infectious causes must be ruled out) before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for urinary and fecal incontinence — 12 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Five Patterns

1. Kidney-Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Stress leakage with coughing, laughing or lifting, cold sensation in the lower back and legs, frequent nighttime urination, low energy.
Tongue: Pale, puffy tongue with teeth marks and white coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak.
Treatment principle: Warm and tonify Kidney-Yang to restore the Bladder's closing function.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-Yang-deficiency slide.

2. Kidney-Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dribbling after urination, frequent clear urine especially at night, weak lower back and knees, fatigue.
Tongue: Pale, slightly puffy with possible teeth marks. Pulse: Deep and weak.
Treatment principle: Tonify Kidney-Qi to secure the Bladder gate.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Despite the plain \"Kidney-Qi Deficiency\" name (a category usually declined on this site as too generic — see Nasal Polyps, Recurrent Miscarriage, Uterine Prolapse, Fetus Malposition), this pattern's own hallmark symptom, \"dribbling after urination,\" is the exact diagnostic marker of this site's Kidney-Qi-not-Firm slide, so it is linked here on content rather than declined on name alone.

3. Spleen-Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Poor appetite, bloating after meals, loose stools, leakage with fatigue or after meals, heaviness in the limbs.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender with tooth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Weak, at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen-Qi and lift sinking Qi to restore the upward holding force.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Spleen-Qi-deficiency slide.

4. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Stress leakage, pale complexion, dizziness with heart palpitations, profound fatigue, often post-childbirth or after chronic illness.
Tongue: Pale, possibly thin with teeth marks. Pulse: Fine and weak.
Treatment principle: Tonify both Qi and Blood to rebuild pelvic floor strength.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. This site's decks have no combined Qi-and-Blood-deficiency slide (confirmed absent many times before), so no pattern link is given — points still link fine individually.

5. Damp-Heat in the Lower Burner View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Urgent urination with burning, cloudy dark yellow urine, heavy sensation in the lower abdomen — a less common pattern here.
Tongue: Red body, slightly swollen, yellow greasy coating at the root. Pulse: Rapid, slippery.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and drain Dampness to eliminate Bladder irritation.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Bladder slide on the same Lower-Burner organ-system logic already used for Jaundice, Cloudy Urine and Flank Pain.
