Urinary Dysfunction

How Chinese medicine differentiates general urinary dysfunction into the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Urinary Tract Infection and Frequent Urination pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Inability to urinate, blood in the urine, or urinary dysfunction with fever or severe pain needs prompt medical assessment.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for general urinary dysfunction — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
REN-3Resolves Dampness from the Lower Burner. Promotes the Bladder function of Qi transformation. Benefits the Uterus and regulates menstruation.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Promotes the function of the Liver and the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
BL-28Regulates the Bladder. Resolves Dampness in Lower Burner. Eliminates stagnation and dissolves masses.
