Urinary Tract Infection

How Chinese medicine differentiates a urinary tract infection into the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Frequent Urination and Kidney Stones pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Fever, flank pain, or blood in the urine needs prompt medical evaluation to rule out a kidney infection before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for a urinary tract infection (supportive, alongside medical evaluation) — 12 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Five Patterns

1. Damp-Heat in the Bladder View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Burning or stinging pain during urination, dark yellow or cloudy turbid urine, constant urge to urinate but only passing a few drops, lower abdominal fullness and pressure.
Tongue: Red body with yellow, greasy coating thickest at the root. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clears Heat and drains Fire, promotes urination and relieves stranguria, clears Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Bladder slide.

2. Spleen and Kidney Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Urinary frequency or urgency worsening with overwork, chronic fatigue and low stamina, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, poor appetite with loose stools, nighttime urination.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white moist or slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, weak, and thready, especially weak at the right Guan and both Chi positions.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Spleen and Kidney Qi to stabilize Essence and reduce urinary frequency, strengthens the lower back and knees.
Note: moxa strongly indicated throughout. Linked to this site's own Kidney-and-Spleen-Yang-deficiency slide — the closest match, with the plain-Qi-deficiency framing here (no explicit cold signs) flagged against that slide's Yang-deficiency framing.

3. Heat and Blood Stagnation in the Lower Burner View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dark-red or cola-colored urine, stabbing pain during urination, fixed lower abdominal pain resistant to pressure, irritability and mental restlessness, fever worse at night, dry mouth and throat.
Tongue: Reddish-purple body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, dry yellow coating. Pulse: Deep, choppy, and rapid.
Treatment principle: Cools the Blood and stops bleeding, promotes urination and relieves stranguria, clears Heat from the Lower Burner.
Note: no moxa; fever worse at night with dark urine needs medical evaluation regardless (possible kidney involvement). Linked to this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the established discoloration-marker rule.

4. Kidney Yin Deficiency With Empty-Heat Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Scanty, dark urine possibly appearing light-red, mild burning or discomfort on urination, symptoms worsening in the late afternoon and evening, night sweats and heat sensations in the palms, soles, and chest, lower back soreness.
Tongue: Red, thin, and dry with little or no coating, cracks may appear. Pulse: Fine and rapid, especially weak at the rear position.
Treatment principle: Nourishes Yin, clears deficiency Heat, nourishes Kidney-Yin.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency-Empty-Heat-blazing slide.

5. Qi Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Urinary hesitation or interrupted stream, lower abdominal distension or bloating, symptoms worsening with emotional stress, frequent sighing or irritability.
Tongue: Normal or slightly dusky body with thin white coating. Pulse: Wiry, especially at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Moves stagnant Qi downward to unblock the urinary passage.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Liver-Qi-stagnation slide.
