Weak Legs

How Chinese medicine differentiates weak legs into the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Leg Pain, Weak Limbs and Muscle Weakness pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. New, progressive or one-sided leg weakness, or weakness with numbness, bladder or bowel changes, needs prompt medical assessment.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for weak legs — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Original Qi.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Promotes the function of the Liver and the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
G.B.-34Promotes the smooth flow of Liver-Qi. Resolves Damp-Heat in Liver and Gall Bladder. Benefits the sinews.

1. Spleen and Stomach Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Weak, heavy legs; fatigue that worsens after eating; poor appetite, bloating, loose stools; sallow complexion.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tooth-marked, thin white coat. Pulse: Weak, soft; empty at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Spleen Qi, raises Yang and strengthens digestive transformation.
Note: moxa is appropriate. Linked to this site's own Stomach-and-Spleen-Qi-deficiency slide.

2. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Lower-back and knee soreness with weak legs; dizziness, tinnitus, night sweats, heat in palms and soles, dry eyes, insomnia.
Tongue: Red, thin, cracked, little or no coat. Pulse: Fine, rapid, wiry; weak at the left rear position.
Treatment principle: Nourishes Kidney and Liver Yin, replenishes Essence and strengthens bones and sinews.
Note: no moxa (Yin deficiency with heat signs).

3. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Generalized muscle weakness; pale or sallow complexion and lips; dizziness on standing; palpitations; spontaneous sweating.
Tongue: Pale, possibly thin, tooth marks, thin white coat. Pulse: Fine and weak; may be empty or slow.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Qi and Blood, nourishes the muscles and restores endurance.
Note: moxa is appropriate. This site's decks have no combined Qi-and-Blood-deficiency slide, a gap confirmed absent many times — no pattern link is given here.

4. Damp-Heat in the Lower Burner View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Heavy, dragging legs; swelling or puffiness; heat in the feet and calves; thirst without desire to drink; sticky discharge; worse in humid weather.
Tongue: Red body, thick greasy yellow coat, thickest at the root. Pulse: Slippery and rapid; sometimes soggy.
Treatment principle: Clears Heat, dries Dampness and drains the obstruction from the channels.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Bladder slide, its established Lower-Burner Damp-Heat convention.

5. Lung Dryness View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry cough with scanty phlegm; dry mouth and throat; dry skin; limp, weak legs; thirst; slight fever.
Tongue: Red, dry surface, thin dry white or yellow coat. Pulse: Floating, rapid, fine; prominent at the right front position.
Treatment principle: Moistens the Lungs, clears Heat, generates fluids and nourishes the sinews.
Note: no moxa.
