Pale Face

How Chinese medicine differentiates a persistently pale complexion into the 5 patterns behind it, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Pale Inner Eyelids, Pale Lips and Dull Pale Complexion pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

A sudden change to a pale, ashen, or grey complexion, especially with chest pain, breathlessness, or fainting, needs urgent medical evaluation.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for a pale face — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Original Qi.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Promotes the function of the Liver and the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
REN-6Tonifies Qi and Yang. Raises sinking Qi. Tonifies Original Qi.

Tongue: Pale, possibly thin with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, especially at the right Guan.
Treatment principle: Tonify both Qi and Blood, strengthening the Spleen to generate them.

Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen-Qi, strengthen Lung function, resolve the Dampness obstructing Qi production.

3. Yang Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: A pale, bluish-white face; cold hands and feet; feeling cold with an aversion to cold; a desire for warmth; fatigue and low vitality; loose stools.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, moist with teeth marks, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, and weak.
Treatment principle: Warm and tonify Kidney-Yang, dispel internal cold, restore circulation.
Note: Confirmed absent again: this site's own Excessive Sweating and Esophageal Stricture pages leave the identically-named plain Yang-Deficiency pattern unlinked for the same reason.

Clinical manifestations: A bearing-down or dragging sensation in the lower abdomen, a tendency toward organ prolapse, bloating after eating, loose stools, dizziness, a pale puffy sagging face, extreme fatigue.

5. Kidney Essence Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A deep, ashen pale complexion; sore weak lower back and knees; poor memory; tinnitus or hearing loss; premature greying or hair loss.
Tongue: Pale, thin with little or no coating, possible fine cracks. Pulse: Fine, deep, weak at both rear positions.
Treatment principle: Deeply nourish Kidney-Yin and essence to replenish the body's foundational reserves.
