Snoring

How Chinese medicine differentiates snoring into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Snoring with gasping, choking, long pauses in breathing, or extreme daytime sleepiness may signal sleep apnea and needs professional diagnosis, not a pattern-based approach alone.

1. Damp-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Loud, wet, rattling snore, feeling of heaviness in the body and head, copious white phlegm or mucus, chest stuffiness or upper abdominal bloating, poor appetite and fatigue.
Tongue: Pale and swollen with tooth marks, covered by a thick, white, greasy coat that looks oily or pasty. Pulse: Slippery, often soggy at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Dries Dampness, transforms Phlegm, regulates Qi, strengthens Spleen function.
Note: no moxa. This site has no plain body-wide Damp-Phlegm slide on any deck, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

2. Spleen and Lung Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Soft, low-pitched snoring worse with fatigue and after eating, chronic tiredness and weak voice, poor appetite and abdominal bloating, loose stools, pale face without lustre, catches colds easily.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, and tender with teeth marks on the edges and a thin white slippery coating. Pulse: Weak overall, especially at the right Cun and Guan positions, soft and lacking force.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Qi, strengthens the Spleen, harmonizes the Stomach, dries Dampness, transforms Phlegm.

Tongue: Dark purple body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Invigorates Blood, dispels stasis, moves Qi, alleviates pain, opens the chest.
